Chapter Five

Hope was in ski-heaven as she flew down from the top of the mountain, the first skier of the day to glide over the four inches of fresh snow that had rolled in during the night. Since she had no lessons scheduled for the day, she took full advantage of having the trail to herself and raced down, pushing her legs to the limit and loving every slalom, twist, and mogul she went around, through, and over. She forgot about the mortgage payment due in five days, shoved the medical bill that came in the mail yesterday to the back of her mind, even ignored the new, funky, it’ll-probably-cost-a-bundle-to-fix rattle her car made while she’d driven to Sugarbush this morning.

The one thing she couldn’t forget, try though she did, was the feel of Tyler Coleman’s lips pressed against hers.

They barely classified as romantic or passionate kisses, and yet both times his mouth came in contact with hers, she’d been stricken physically immobile and rendered mentally useless. All capacity for rational thought had flown, to leave her with only the capability to feel.

And feel she did. The warm, sweet touch of his breath as he sighed, the drumming of her heart three times faster than usual against her ribcage, the tingling sensation in her toes that worked its way up the length of her body. Hope had been kissed before and much more thoroughly. But the over-enthusiastic, ill-experienced, and sloppy-tongued probings of high school and college boys had been nothing like the soul-awakening kiss Tyler had given her. Twice now.

And he’d been the one to pull back both times, which had Hope thinking he hadn’t felt the potency of those kisses as she had.

What really gave her cause to worry, though, was whether or not she’d put him off with the discussion of her paternal grandparents. Hope never talked about her father’s issues with his parents, but Tyler was an expert at digging for information. It was no surprise he was a lawyer, and she bet he was a good one, too. Calmly, quietly, and with no pressure, he’d gotten her to talk of her parents’ past and the fractured relationship her father had had with his family. What did he think about those circumstances? And why was his opinion so important to her? He would be leaving in a few days, back to his life in New York. She’d never see him again unless he decided to come back for another ski vacation. Sadness drifted through her at the thought.

Tyler Coleman was a handsome, mature, well-educated man who spoke to her with respect and interest, both refreshing. Hope gave many ski lessons to arrogant tourists and pulled many a draft beer for sloppy drunks and guys wanting to scratch a sexual itch for the night. She’d never gotten that kind of vibe from Tyler in all the times they were together, not even when they’d kissed. He could easily have pressed her into more, and, she admitted, she would have considered it.
